Summary

Throughout the 20th century, research on folklore in the Basque Country has developed in association with the political movement. Together with other aspects and considering this is also a sign of identity, it was analysed as an axis of specific personality. On the other hand, with the evident social changes that have taken place throughout the century, it is indispensable to immediately compile non-material objects from popular culture. The functionality of the research was manifest, both in political and in social terms. Impelled by the situation, quality was not always the objective. Quality was achieved, or not, depending on the ability and training of the researchers. The current situation of research on folklore is the result of all of the above, and it is a situation in which researchers are experiencing many a need. In the current phase, experts in folklore must do some thinking in common to locate their work in a basic context.
