Summary

The current process of economic globalisation is causing three types of ecological impact: the expansion and acceleration in the use of natural resources and the transformation of the geography of ecological pressure throughout the world. It is the poorest countries which suffer an ever-increasing load with pollution and the untenable abuse of their natural resources. This, and the escalation of the international competition, cause a loss of sovereignty and autonomy in environmental decision making. To confront these trends, it would be necessary to globalise environmental protection by means of more powerful environmental institutions and treaties; modify consumption habits and production models; and regulate economic and commercial transactions, placing them at the service of sustainable development, social progress and human rights .
