Summary

The paper analyzes the most ancient evidences of place-names in the territory of the Commonwealth of Chartered Municipalities of Vizcaya (Mancomunidad de Municipios de Las Encartaciones de Vizcaya) and later testimonies with the aim of contributing to a better knowledge of the presence and coexistence of Romance and Basque, and to the distinction of diatopic linguistic situations. Firm criteria to define achronology of Romance and Basque place-names are searched.
