Summary

The toponymy of Treviño, representative of Central and Eastern Álava, provides valuable information on the chronology of the Basque-Romance contact. We analyse the suffixation of Castilian place names, which allows us to sketch a stratigraphy of the toponymisation of this territory. We also address the western traits of Basque toponymy documented since 1025 but not before the sixth century, when it is set the beginning of the contact.
