Summary

Heraldry was the emblematic system of Western Europe. It appeared during the 11th and 12th centuries out of military necessity and soon reached the status of general characteristic of civilization, and became widespread in all Western societies. This paper explores the origins of the phenomenon of coats-of-arms, and their historical evolution from the 12th to the 18th centuries in the Iberian area.
