Summary

The first cinematographic performances in the Basque Country began a few months after the Lumière brothers projected their first images in Paris. Local operators who projected common aspects of daily life soon appeared. Afterwards, in the nineteen-twenties, there is a timid start in the production of silent movies. The incipient Basque production is affected by the irruption of the .talking. cinema in 1929. The consequences of the civil war in the cultural field seriously affected cinema and for several decades there was hardly any autochthonous production. In 1968, Ama Lur is produced, a documentary movie that collected basic aspects of Basque identity. This was the beginning of modern Basque cinema.
