Summary

20th century Basque writers, when they refer to the sea, speak of "something else", they always use an indirect expression. The symbolic power or symbolisation of the sea is so strong that it seems one cannot make any mention of it without the descriptions or allusions of the author adopting a second sense. The present work includes literary test of the type "tell me what you see in the sea and I will show you what kind of writer you are" with Basque writers that have used the sea (Txomina Agirre, Etxepare "Mirikua", Lauaxeta, Iratzeder, Mirande, Txillardegi, Gandiaga, Sarrionaindia).
