Summary

Since King Alfonso VIII of Castille granted Hondarribia the statute of population (1203), Hondarribia obtained the dominance of the neighbouring villages of the lower Bidasoa and confirmed its monopoly on salmon fishing. This situation was the origin of polemics, conflicts and deaths for centuries. Since the invention and use of nets for such fishing (15th-16th centuries) the situation gradually became worse, while at the same time as the political problems between both kingdoms also worsened. Such intense exploitation of this resource placed the species in danger of extinction.
