Summary

The reports claiming territorial recognition for the French (northern) Basque Country depend, to a large extent, on the participants´ different representations of Basque culture. They stake a claim or reject the Basque language entering the public sphere depending on their diverging perceptions of Basque culture. These positions back, denounce or attempt to reread Basque ethnic genesis, historically marked by both essentialist and culturalist refer-ence points.
