Summary

In view of the as yet unpublished historical documentation an analysis is made and a reinterpretation of the Bilbao toponym Sendeja is proposed. Until now it had been interpreted as a derivate of senda (path). A more ancient form, Cendeja is related with its Basque version Zingira and for both the common etym *caenica is proposed, either directly from Vulgar Latin or through some kind of intermediate Romanic form.
