Summary

Towards 1870, primary schools start a campaign against regional languages. But if the republicans generally agree on the need to eradicate local languages, they are divided on the steps to be taken for that purpose. There are two opposite tendencies: the first is hostile to any use of Basque in class, whereas the second accepts its use, but only with the purpose of facilitating the learning of French.
