Summary

This article is a succinct introduction to existing farm birds in the southwest of France, which denotes a difficult situation for the majority of local fowl races. The hen from Gascoigne, a traditional race in the western Pyrinees, is one of the best represented among farm races but it is now extremely rare in the Basque Country. Safeguard actions are being carried out to contribute to the development of the race. The hen the Landes, the Gascoigne turkey and the Toulouse goose are very threatened. Details are provided on the validity of some genetic resources.
