Summary

From time to time, in Gipuzkoa, references turn up on the fact that an animal that was referred to as a tiger or leopard had been found dead. In the documents, reference is made to a reward granted in 1603 to the hunters from Villafranca for killing an "onza" (wild cat) and three years later, a "tiguere" was killed in Ataun. These animals belonged to the fauna in Gipuzkoa since tiger is translated in Basque as "katamotza", however, it is believed that they were in fact lynxes. The author provides the etymology of "onza"
