Summary

This article analyzes the policy of life imprisonment from an international perspective. The life imprisonment policies of European nations and the U.S.A. are reviewed. An overview of human rights issues and life imprisonment is presented. Proportionality is used as the philosophy of punishment underlying life imprisonment as a penal policy. The special situation of juveniles is also discussed.
