Summary

Antón de Irala, delegate of the Basque Government in New York, approaches a mostly unknown topic in his times: the Basque communities established in United States. About 500 Basque families reside in New York, although it is especially in the states of the American West (California, Idaho, Montana, Snowfall, Oregon, Utah) where most of the Basques have settled. Most of them work, by tradition, in shepherding. It is not unusual to find families that have completely forgotten their French or Spanish, but who still carefully preserve the Basque language.
