Summary
This article presents a state of the art of the study of the important Fêtes de Bayonne / Baionako Bestak, from different sociological and geographical perspectives. After the critical review of severalworks, and studies on the festivals in southern Europe, a new vision is proposed. This highlights the prominence of the popular agents –‘peñas’ and ‘cuadrillas’– during the Bayonne festivals, and places emphasison its Basque identity dimension.
