Around the end of the 18 th century and the beginning of the 19 th century, during the War of the Convention and the rebellion against Napoleon, Gipuzkoan churches lost most of the silver apparel accumulated in their treasures due to the seizure by the Provincial Diputation of ecclesiastic silver to pay for war expenses ; to the pillage of the parishes in villages occupied by French troops ; and to the plunder of the churches by bandits from France.
