Summary

The Royal Basque Society of Friends of the Country (Real Sociedad Bascongada de Amigos del País) expanded itself en America somewhat irregularly. It established itself quite solidly in New Spain. It was smaller in New Grenada, although it had outstandinga members there. Its establishment in the Viceroyship of Peru was much later and it also grouped some relevant associates there. The Society procured a smaller influence in the Viceroyship of Rio de la Plata. The task of José Antonio de Armona , from Alava, deserves special mention: he was in charge of the Royal Exchequer and of organising the maritime post office in Havana (1765-1776), he organized the Society in the island, and he was its first Commissioner.
