Summary

On occasion of the fourth centennial of the death of Juan of Zumárraga, who was first Bishop and then Archbishop of Mexico, Jesus de Galíndez has written the biography of this illustrious Basque. In its second part, the author concentrates on his character and genius that was decidedly influenced by the traditional Basque sense of freedom: rebellion against in justice, defence of the liberty of the Indians, and a practical religious sense. This is how his Basque origin is reflected in Zumárraga´s personality as well as in his work. Zumárraga always maintained his ties to Durango, his native town.
