Summary

The patronage of Rodrigo Mercado de Zuazola (1460?-1548), Royal Counsellor and Bishop of Mallorca and Avila, and humanist from Oñati, was decisive for the early introduction of the Renaissance style in Gipuzkoa, which he contributed to by building the funreral chapel in the church of San Miguel of Oñati, and above all by founding, in that town, the first University in Basque territory.
