Summary

Several compositions for shawms, comprised in a manuscript dated 1756, but which belong to a previous aesthetic trend (the 17th and possibly the 16th century), are compared with pieces composed for other instrumental ensembled, being contemporary, subsequent or preserved by oral tradition. The stylistic comparison and the different hypothesis, worked out to trace a possible timbre-evolution, allow to uphold the statement that, during the classicism and romanticism, and even until the 20th century, there is some kind of "music for shawms", especially for religious purposes played on other instruments, which was little influenced by the prevailing styles and which partially makes up for the absence of preserved genuine "shawm music"
