Summary

In this article, the author makes a reflection in relation to the most relevant publications released within the last twenty years, about the history of plague, about the methodologic aspects that can contribute to a more complete knowledge of the phenomenon. The demographic significance of epidemic mortality, the medical doctrimes about the disease, and its immediate social impact, have produced a significant literature within the last few years. Taking the Basque Country as a reference, and considerating its climatic and epidemiological characteristics, the author points to the convenience that studies on plague history should pay more attention to the roads structure of the area, in order to evaluate with more rigour the moving speed of the epidemic, the breakthrough routes, and the way in which the isolation measures were efficient or bypassed.
