Zabala, Jon Mikel

Jon Mikel Zabala-Iturriagagoitia is Associate Professor at the Deusto Business School, University of Deusto in San Sebastian (Spain). He received his PhD from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) in Engineering and Innovation Projects (2008). His main research skills and interests include innovation policy, innovation management, and the use of indicators to inform innovation policymaking. He is a young corresponding member of Jakiunde since November 2019.

Ugalde, Jesus M.

Jesus M. Ugalde Uribe-Etxebarria is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He holds a degree from the University of Valladolid and a PhD in Chemistry from the same University (1984). He was a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennesee, USA (1987), at Dalhousie University, Canada (1986 and 1989) and at Cornell University, USA (1992). He has published more than 300 scientific publications, more than ten book review articles and 20 popular science essays. He has been a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports since 2015 and of the editorial board of Computation since 2013.

Echeverría, Javier

Javier Echeverria Ezponda is a researcher at the Basque Science Foundation (Ikerbasque). He is also affiliated to the Department of Sociology II at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and is Professor on leave of absence from the Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC. His main fields of research have been the philosophy of science and technology; the ethics of science; the study of the relations between science, technology and society and the new information and communication technologies.

Echenique, Pedro M.

Pedro Miguel Echenique (Isaba, 1950) is a physicist specialized in condensed matter physics. He holds a degree in Physics from the University of Navarra and a PhD from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the University of Cambridge and has also been awarded six honorary doctorates. He has supervised 27 doctoral theses and published more than 400 articles in leading journals such as Nature and Science. He has been an invited speaker at over one hundred international conferences. Among his distinctions are the Prince of Asturias Award and the Max Planck Physics Prize (both in 1998). He served as Minister of Education and Culture in the first Basque Government and was a key promoter of the Basque Language Normalization Law. Founder of the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), he is Honorary President of Jakiunde.

Vega, Luis

Luis Vega González (Madrid, 1960) graduated in Mathematics from the Complutense University of Madrid in 1982. In 1988, he obtained his PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and, after a two-year stay at the University of Chicago, he returned to the UAM. In 1993, he joined the University of the Basque Country, where he has been Professor of Mathematical Analysis since 1995. Professor Vega is currently the principal investigator for the Severo Ochoa accreditation at the BCAM (Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics) and a world expert in partial differential equations and Fourier analysis.

Fanelli, Luca

PhD in Piano (2002) and Mathematics (2008), he is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the University of the Basque Country, after serving as Associate Professor of Analysis at the University of Rome "La Sapienza". His research focuses on Spectral Theory, Fourier Analysis, and Partial Differential Equations, with special interest in Quantum Mechanics, particularly quantitative aspects of scattering. He has led national and international projects, published widely in top journals, and supervised seven PhD theses (two completed, five ongoing). In 2023, he founded 2M: Music and Mathematics, promoting artistic and scientific culture, including the “Villa de Bilbao” Music Competition (third edition in 2026). He currently serves on the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) for the Area of Mathematics and coordinates Innovation at the Bilbao Academy of Medical Sciences.

Uriagereka, Juan

Juan Uriagereka has been a professor at the University of Maryland (Linguistics and the School of Languages, Literatures, & Cultures) since 1989, after a postdoctoral stint at UMass, Amherst. Trained as a syntactician at the University of Connecticut, Uriagereka is interested in the Chomskyan biolinguistics program. It is through earlier interests in economics and biology that he engaged in architectural and foundational aspects of language and cognition. He has co-authored or (co-)edited about a dozen books for the major publishers and participated in the education of several linguists. Considering it the responsibility of any intellectual to offer their expertise to society – especially when their views can help shape public policy and address social justice – most of his outreach activities have concentrated on cultural politics and the defense of human diversity.

Orús, Román

Román Orús (Barcelona, 1979-01-04) is a Spanish theoretical physicist renowned for his work in quantum information science and quantum tensor networks. He serves as an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) in San Sebastián and is the co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Multiverse Computing, one of the largest quantum software companies in the European Union. Orús earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Barcelona in 2006, where his doctoral thesis connected quantum algorithms with quantum phase transitions. His research has advanced tensor network methods for complex quantum systems and has practical applications ranging from quantum computing in finance to quantum-inspired machine learning and AI model compression. He has received prestigious awards including the 2024 Physics, Innovation and Technology Award from the Spanish Royal Society of Physics, the Early Career Prize from the European Physical Society, and a Marie Curie Incoming International Fellowship.

Barja, Sara

Dr. Sara Barja is an Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Her work aims to understand how a material’s structure shapes its reactivity in (electro-)catalysis. To do this, she combines atomic-resolution microscopy with complementary techniques that can probe catalysts under realistic operating conditions. Her research supports cleaner routes for energy conversion through environmentally responsible catalytic processes. She earned her PhD in Physics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2012 and later worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL, USA) and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF, Germany). She currently coordinates an ERC Starting Grant project focused on producing hydrogen from seawater. Her trajectory has been recognized with several awards, including the Ikerbasque Starting Award (2023) and the “Jóvenes Talentos” Prize (GEE–RSEQ, 2024). She is young corresponding member of Jakiunde since 2023. She also regularly takes part in outreach events such as Naukas, Jakin-mina, and TEDx.

Marcaide, Jon

Jon Marcaide obtained his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1982. He was a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR, 1982–1985), Siemens AG (1985–1986), and later served as Scientific Researcher and Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, 1986–2020), as well as Full Professor at the University of Valencia (1991–2020). He was one of the three founders of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA) in 1991 and served as its second President (1996–2000). Since 2003, he has been a full member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Spain, and since 2022 he has chaired its Physics and Chemistry Section. He received, among other distinctions, the Euskadi Research Award in 2004. He has been a full member of Jakiunde since its founding in 2007. His most recent book is Últimas noticias del universo (Espasa, 2021).

Salvador, Eduard

Eduard Salvador Solé is Emeritus Professor at the University of Barcelona (UB). He obtained his degree in Physics in 1976 and earned his PhD in Astrophysics from Université Paris VII in the field of cosmology, where he has continued working ever since, specifically on the theory of galaxy formation and evolution and dark matter. He has published 147 scientific articles in international journals, accumulating over 1,500 citations. He has authored two books and numerous popular science articles. In addition to holding various management positions at UB and within major Spanish scientific facilities, Prof. Salvador was co-founder of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA), where he served as both Secretary and President, and promoted the creation of the Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies (COSCE), of which he was Founding President.

Zubiaga, Ana

She is Full Professor of Genetics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where she teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. With over 30 years of experience in Cancer Biology and Genetics, she is an expert in the transcriptional regulation of the cell cycle, a cancer hallmark. She leads the consolidated research group “Molecular Biology of Cancer”, and currently coordinates the UPV/EHU Cancer Research Network within the ENLIGHT-Cancer alliance of European universities. Her research focuses on the role of cell cycle regulators in cell fate determination, cancer development, and immune surveillance, integrating cellular and in vivo models with genomic and proteomic approaches. She has supervised 24 PhD theses and numerous Master’s projects, and currently serves as Scientific Officer for the Biomedicine-Cancer Scientific Area at the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI) and as President of the Basque Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters (JAKIUNDE).

Rodríguez, José Antonio

He is a lecturer (Profesor Agregado) at the Department of Genetics, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology of the EHU, teaching several undergraduate courses, including “Medical Genetics”, at the School of Medicine and Nursing. He also coordinates the course “Molecular Bases of Cell Proliferation, Differentiation and Death” in the Master in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine. He is a member of the “Molecular Biology of Cancer” research group. His scientific interest focuses on understanding how alteration of the key cellular mechanisms that control protein transport and degradation contributes to tumour development, with the final goal of improving the treatment of cancer patients. He has supervised ten PhD Theses, as well as multiple undergraduate and Master’s theses.

Fullaondo, Asier

He is a lecturer (Profesor Agregado) in the Department of Genetics, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where he teaches several undergraduate courses, including Human Genetics and Genomics, in the School of Science and Technology. He also coordinates the Master’s programme in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine and is a member of the “Molecular Biology of Cancer” research group. His research focuses on understanding how alterations in TEDC2 regulate centriole duplication and how these changes contribute to tumour development. He has supervised seven PhD theses, as well as numerous undergraduate and Master’s theses.

Iglesias-Ara, Ainhoa

She is an Associate Professor (Profesora Titular) at the Department of Genetics, Physical Anthropology and Animal Physiology of the UPV/EHU, where she teaches several undergraduate courses, including “Genetics” and “Genetic Engineering and Molecular Genetic Analysis”, at the Faculty of Science and Technology. With over 20 years of experience in Cancer Biology and Transcriptional Regulation, she is expert in E2F transcription factors, cellular homeostasis, and tumor suppression mechanisms. She is a member of the consolidated research group “Molecular Biology of Cancer”. Her current scientific interest focuses on unveiling the role of E2Fs in immune surveillance and their implications for cancer immune evasion and inflammatory diseases. She has supervised three PhD theses, as well as multiple undergraduate and Master’s theses, and currently serves as a member of the Ethics Committee for Animal Experimentation (CEEA) of the UPV/EHU.

Pérez Iglesias, Juan Ignacio

Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias is a Spanish biologist and Professor of Physiology at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He holds a PhD in Biology and has developed his academic career in evolutionary biology, physiology, and philosophy of biology. He served as Rector of the UPV/EHU between 2004 and 2008 and later directed the Chair of Scientific Culture, playing a key role in the promotion of science communication and public understanding of science. He is a member of Jakiunde, the Basque Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, and has participated in several national scientific advisory bodies. Since 2024, he has served as Minister (Councillor) for Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government.

Jiménez, Sixto

Sixto Jiménez Muniain (Sangüesa, 1950) holds a degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Deusto. He served as CEO of Viscofán S.A. from 1983 to 2000. He has been a member of the boards of directors of Metrovacesa, Gecina (France), Lokku (UK), Naturin (Germany), Tripasín (Sweden), DA Asociados, Riberebro, Sodena, and Caja Navarra. He is currently a board member of Argenol S.L. and M. Torres S.A., and serves as Chairman of Tuttipasta S.A. and Hannun S.L. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Center for Basque Studies (CBS) at the University of Nevada, Reno; trustee of the Iura Vasconiae Foundation; treasurer of Jakiunde; and Vice President for Navarra of Eusko Ikaskuntza. He has also taught Strategy at the University of Zaragoza (Business School of Pamplona). He is the author of the book Cuestión de confianza: más allá de la inteligencia emocional (translated into English), as well as more than 100 popular articles on economics. His distinctions include the ESIC Aster Award (2007), the “Ser Navarro” Award (2008), and the National Award of the Spanish Confederation of Executives (2009).

Sultan Qaboos University. the Diplomatic Academy of Malta. and universities in Peru. Dr. Ureta holds PhDs in History (University of Deusto) and International Relations (King’s College London). a Global Business diploma from Harvard Business School and a Leadership certificate from the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs.

Innerarity, Daniel

Daniel Innerarity is a philosopher and political theorist known for his work on democracy, governance, and decision-making in complex, globalized societies. His research connects political philosophy, social theory, and complexity studies, addressing democratic legitimacy, uncertainty, collective intelligence, and the role of knowledge and ignorance in contemporary politics. He has critically examined classical models of sovereignty and political control, proposing alternatives based on indirect governance, institutional learning, and adaptive democracy. Innerarity has held academic positions and contributed as a researcher and public intellectual in various European and international institutions. His work has been translated into multiple languages and has significantly influenced current debates on the transformation and renewal of democratic theory and practice.

Barandiaran, Xabier E.

Xabier E. Barandiaran is Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Philosophy at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and a member of IAS-Research (Life, Mind and Society). His research spans philosophy of mind, biological and cognitive sciences, and technopolitics, combining complex-systems analysis with conceptual and computational models of autonomy and agency. He earned a PhD in Philosophy of Science and Cognitive Systems at UPV/EHU and an MSc in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems at the University of Sussex. He has been a visiting researcher in Stockholm, Austria, Madrid, Sussex and Paris, and coordinated Barcelona City Council’s R&D for citizen participation, helping launch the Decidim platform. He has authored 50+ indexed publications including 4 books, among them Sensorimotor Life (OUP, 2017) and Outonomy (Springer).

García-Etxarri, Aitzol

Aitzol García-Etxarri (Donostia–San Sebastián, 1981) is currently an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), where he leads a research group of 12 members (6 men and 6 women). His group primarily studies light–matter interactions at the nanoscale, both from a fundamental science perspective and with applications in biological problems and quantum technologies. He obtained his PhD in Physics in 2010 from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), under the supervision of Javier Aizpurua and Pedro Miguel Echenique. His doctoral thesis received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award as well as the International Doctorate distinction. From 2011 to 2014, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University in the laboratory of Jennifer Dionne. In 2014, he was awarded a “Fellows Gipuzkoa” grant to begin his independent research career at DIPC. Regarding his scientific contributions, Aitzol has published several seminal articles across different research areas. He was a pioneer in providing a theoretical explanation for the first experiments on antenna-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy. He is also the first author of a seminal contribution demonstrating that high-index nanoparticles can act as lossless magnetoelectric optical antennas. During his postdoctoral period at Stanford University, he developed the theoretical framework for nanoparticle-enhanced circular dichroism spectroscopy of chiral molecules, and invented and patented a light-driven, nanoparticle-mediated molecular enantioseparation technique. As an independent researcher, his group has made major contributions to the field of topological photonics, including the discovery of the first instance of fragile topology in a photonic crystal, and the identification of the first axionic phase in a photonic crystal. He currently co-leads, together with Rafael Yuste, the Basque NanoNeuro Network (B3N), an international consortium of 9 research groups (7 in the Basque Country and 2 in the USA) focused on applying nanotechnology to neuroscience. Aitzol is also an active science communicator. He delivers multiple public lectures each year, has been a regular contributor to Euskadi Irratia since 2007, has written for Jot Down Magazine, and is a member of the interdisciplinary program “Mestizajes” at DIPC. He is co-founder of the initiative “Orgullo por la Ciencia” in the Basque Country, an effort aimed at increasing the visibility of the LGBTIQ+ community in science.

Jiménez-Pazos, Bárbara

Bárbara Jiménez Pazos (San Sebastián, 1989) holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and, since 2021, has been an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Education, Philosophy and Anthropology of UPV/EHU in San Sebastián. After defending her doctoral thesis in 2016, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Basque Government’s Doctoral Research Staff Training Program (2018–2020). This enabled her to spend two years at the University of Leeds (United Kingdom), in the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. Inspired by leading experts in the history of science with whom she collaborated, she oriented her research towards the study of Darwinism and its socio-philosophical implications in the history of ideas, a field in which she continues to work. This research direction, largely developed during her time in Leeds, has not only defined her current line of work but has also allowed her to join as a permanent member of the iHPS-Research group at UPV/EHU, specializing in the history and philosophy of science, thereby consolidating her academic trajectory in this field. Among her academic management responsibilities, she serves as Secretary of the International Ontology Congress.
