Joxerramon Bengoetxea, EHUko errektore

Joxerramon Bengoetxea, member of Eusko Ikaskuntza, is the new rector of the University of the Basque Country following the election held on November 26. The also member Ixone Fernández de Labastida will be part of his team.

Joxerramon Bengoetxea joined Eusko Ikaskuntza at the age of 18, in February 1982, as a first-year law student. Since then, he has taught and shared his knowledge in courses, conferences and workshops, collaborated in publications and dissemination tasks, and advised the Society whenever requested.

From the Law Section of Eusko Ikaskuntza, he participated in the creation of the Europa-Euskal Herria Studies Group, through which he promoted the organization of conferences on Regionalism and European Integration, and coordinated the drafting of a Draft Constitution for Europe, which would ultimately be the only one submitted by a Basque institution in response to the invitation made in 2003 by the EU to design a new supranational architecture.

Professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of the Basque Country and director of the official International Master in Sociology of Law, in 2010 Joxerramon Bengoetxea received the Eusko Ikaskuntza-Laboral Kutxa Prize for Humanities, Culture, Art and Social Sciences, and in 2023 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Helsinki.
