The City of Bayonne Prizes were awarded on 20 December

Eusko Ikaskuntza and the City of Bayonne are awarding three prizes for research and creative work relating to the Basque Country, Iparralde and Bayonne.

The ceremony began at 18:30. Mr Yves Ugalde, deputy for culture, opened the ceremony by recalling the partnership between Eusko Ikaskuntza Iparralde and the City of Bayonne, underlining its importance and its attachment to Basque culture.

Anne-Marie Galé presented the Jean-Mixel Larrasquet prize of honour, Xipri Arbelbide.  She spoke of his impressive career and his work on behalf of Euskara, Basque culture and the Church. Xipri Arbelbide thanked Eusko Ikaskuntza and the City of Bayonne, and spoke of the work of the peacemakers.

Iban Larrandaburu then presented the thesis prize awarded to Pauline Guëlle for her thesis entitled L'impunité de la torture dans la consolidation démocratique espagnole: le cas du Pays Basque.

Pauline Guelle thanked Eusko Ikaskuntza for its financial and logistical support for students in the Basque Country.

Finally, Claude Mehats presented the video-documentary prize awarded to the documentary film Bizi naizeno je danserai la vie, directed by Lucia Barahona. She thanked Eusko Ikaskuntza in a speech read by her son in Euskara.

The City of Bayonne then offered a drink of friendship followed by a buffet at the Eusko Ikaskuntza premises.
