Summary

The aim of this work is to verify the advantage in educational levels of the immigrant population, applied to the context of the Bilbao Estuary in the late nineteenth century and during the early industrialization. This advantage is due to the high levels of education in the immigrants´ places of origin, but mainly to a selection process of the immigrants in their places of origin where literacy acts as a positive factor.
