Summary

The studies by Antoine d´Abbadie in the field of linguistics as well as in that of literary criticism must not be forgotten. For example, his "Prolegómenos a la Gramática Vasca" (Prolegomena to Basque Grammar [1836]) emphasise his spirit of comparison and his deep knowledge on the research of internal as well as external matters. He wrote splendid works on African languages and especially on the Ethiopians, such as the "Catalogue raisonné de manuscrits éthiopiennes" (Reasoned catalogue of Ethiopian manuscripts [1859]), and the "Dictionnaire de la langue amariñña" (Dictionary of the amariñña language [1881]), which are fundamental works. He was also a litterary critic and with his customary perspicacity he formulated an early accusation on the falsehood of the "Altabizkarko Kantua" (1859) and he wrote an interesting study and hypothesis on the tale on Tartarua (1878). Also, after creating the Floral Games (1851) and after being their patron for Basque language and literature in the seven provinces of the Basque Country.
