Summary

The last decades have questioned classic and institutionalised museums. Experts in the most various forums take note of new formulations, methodologies and trials with the purpose of banishing the traditional conception that has, up to now, prevailed within cultural circles. Certain initiatives already follow courses of renovation, initiatives that have the implicit idea of dynamism and change that is reflected in society. Territory, heritage, meaning natural and cultural heritage, and population are defined as the basic columns in the framework of this new concept of museums. Therefore, museums stop being buildings and collections, the geographical space opens and is projected and the members of the public become users. The Maritime Museum Ría de Bilbao is a good example of this tendency.
