Summary

Basque civil society is very rich and strong. Over the years it has fed mainly on the progressive character of the long struggle against Franco´s dictatorship and the constant defence of a national identity. Nowadays perhaps its ideological content has weakened somewhat, and there is more organisational diversity, but the old vindications remain: development of Basque identity, solidarity with fellow men and peoples and respect for the environment. Also, above all, there is the defence of the position that any social and political project is to occupy in society. These are the main vindications of the social movements. With this objective in mind, it is indispensable that the various groups get to know each other and work in common.
