Summary

At the beginning of the 21st century, Basque literature in Lapurdi, Lower Navarre and Zuberoa appears to be in a situation that has undergone change: the number of Basque speakers has decreased enormously, the degree of appropriation of other cultures and languages. There is also the schooling that has had very varied consequences, due to a revolution that has lasted 50 years. Basque literature was born in a free space, since creativity has largely made it lose its ties. The language has been renewed, and it has come to various social sectors. The wealth of Basque dialects continues, offering usable possibilities for the writers of Iparralde, and the unified Basque language has also advanced, arriving to a certain balance. Also the relationships with foreign languages, and with the most immediate neighbours have been strengthened, and Basque writers have begun to go down the road of multilingualism, sharing ever more values with non-Basque writers.
