Summary

With respect to the state of health of Basque civil society, my diagnosis is quite pessimistic. However, I believe that the remedy is, to a large extent, within our reach. The Basque conflict is an unbeatable school in terms of conscience awakening. All in all, it is undeniable that despondency is becoming increasingly more extended. Aren´t these two problems, that seem opposed, the consequence of the same cause? We, the Basques, as a consequence of the political conflict, are concerned from our early youth with problems that go far beyond the private field. But, equally, political violence makes enormous tensions arise between organisations, groups and people that conform Basque civil society. If we want to strengthen civil society, it is indispensable to articulate it in an unequivocal manner in connection with certain common values. These values have to be the vertebrating column of social movements, and must always be equally applied, not depending on the topic or subject of the moment.
