Summary
In this work we study the influence the Carmelites of Markina-Xemein had on the town?s cultural and social life, particularly from the last few years of Franco?s regime to the development of the transition (1960-1985). This influence was fundamentally captured in three aspects: the creation and impetus of the Ikastola (Basque-speaking school) and the Zerutxu Association, the organisation of the congress of Bertsolaris (Basque verse singers) and the creation of the youth association Sugar.
