Summary

It is easy to see that, historically, there have been many populations and groups of populations whose economy and social and cultural lives have been organised around the sea, and have generally had a direct and effective relationship with the sea. The coastal area offers an opportunity that is taken advantage of in order to obtain certain material resources while, at the same time, a maritime culture is constituted with its differential peculiarities with respect to other areas. It is important to see how its study has been outlined up to the present day from an anthropological point of view, thus calibrating the state of the issue and the ample future perspectives that the mentioned object of study presents.
