Summary

Medieval linguistic awareness in the Basque-Navarre space was first documented in the 10th and 11th centuries, when Navarrese monarchy started with Sancho I Garcés. It was clearly stated with reference to the Basque language in the Glosses of San Millán de la Cogolla and in the Registers of the monasteries of Leire and Irache. The solemn declaration of the Navarre Romance language as the official language of the Kingdom of Navarre took place in 1350 and 1390 as a result of the coronation of Kings Charles II and Charles III of Navarre.
