Summary

Ahetze it is a village located in Lapurdi that possesses some records that contain municipal deliberations before and during the French Revolution. These records exist in many villages, however, those in Ahetze are exceptional in that they are written in French and Basque, which is considered a unique example of the use of Basque as an official and administrative language. Apparently the reason was that French was very difficult for Jean Etchepare, the person in charge of those records, and since such deliberations were carried out in Basque, he simply used this language which was better-known for him.
