Summary

The ETHNOGRAPHIC RESEARCH carried out by José Miguel Barandiarán, includes the legends, stories, tales and mythical oral traditions of a certain region of Navarra, which covers the area of Lezáun and its neighbours (Arguiñano, Iturgoyen, Iruñela, Riezu, Guesálaz, Guembe, Ugar, Muez, Vidaurre...) To do this, the author interviewed the elderly from the area on ancient beliefs about accidents of the landscape (rocks, lakes) ; heavenly phenomenon ; the buildings and marks left by saints and devils ; monsters, jinns, giants and gentiles ; about the end of the world ; treasures, ruins, misterious animals. In short, that related to a magic universe, so rich until yesterday and now in danger of extinction. Nevertheless, and even recognizing that more has been lost than has been summarized, the work brings us closer, with a fair amount of accuracy, to an ethnographic patrimony undoubtedly attractive to the present-day reader and investigator.
