Summary

In the 18th century, Basque sailors used to fish cod in Newfoundland. This activity enriched the ship owners and, together with ship building, allowed young people from nearby parishes to earn a living. Women used to sell the fish that had been caught in the Bay of Biscay and they created a sardine salting industry. But wars and the political protectionism of the government ruined the country. Only the ship owners were able to overcome the crisis; this island of capitalism announced the France of the Notables of the post-revolutionary period.
