Basabe-Desmonts, Lourdes

Lourdes Basabe-Desmonts is an Ikerbasque Research Professor at the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Lascaray Research Center of the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Spain). She received her PhD from the University of Twente, Netherlands (2006) in Supramolecular Chemistry and Nanotechnology. She is founding director of the Microfluidics and BIOMICs Research Group at the University of the Basque Country since 2014, which is devoted to the development of Lab-on-a-chip technology. She is a young corresponding member of Jakiunde since November 2016.

Zabala-Iturriagagoitia, Jon Mikel

Jon Mikel Zabala-Iturriagagoitia is Associate Professor at the Deusto Business School, University of Deusto in San Sebastian (Spain). He received his PhD from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) in Engineering and Innovation Projects (2008). His main research skills and interests include innovation policy, innovation management, and the use of indicators to inform innovation policymaking. He is a young corresponding member of Jakiunde since November 2019.

Echeverría, Javier

Javier Echeverria Ezponda is a researcher at the Basque Science Foundation (Ikerbasque). He is also affiliated to the Department of Sociology II at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and is Professor on leave of absence from the Institute of Philosophy of the CSIC. His main fields of research have been the philosophy of science and technology; the ethics of science; the study of the relations between science, technology and society and the new information and communication technologies.

Ugalde, Jesus M.

Jesus M. Ugalde Uribe-Etxebarria is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He holds a degree from the University of Valladolid and a PhD in Chemistry from the same University (1984). He was a postdoctoral researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennesee, USA (1987), at Dalhousie University, Canada (1986 and 1989) and at Cornell University, USA (1992). He has published more than 300 scientific publications, more than ten book review articles and 20 popular science essays. He has been a member of the editorial board of Scientific Reports since 2015 and of the editorial board of Computation since 2013.

Apezteguía, Maite

Maite Apezteguía studied at the School of Architecture of the University of Navarra. Between 1986 and 1992 she was assistant lecturer at this university and an associate lecturer from 1992 to 1998. She has also taught as an external lecturer in Architectural Analysis at the School of Architecture of La Salle, Ramon Llull University of Barcelona (1999-2000). In 2010, she founded the Azpeteguía Architects studio and throughout her professional career she has won numerous awards. For example, in 2002, she represented Spain at the 8th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale (Italy). In addition to her work as an architect, she participates in conferences and round tables in which she shares her vision on the inclusion of women in the world of architecture. Apezteguía has been a member of Jakiunde since November 2021.

Balluerka, Nekane

Degree (1989) and PhD (1993) in Psychology from the UPV/EHU, on both occasions with Extraordinary Award, where she has been a lecturer since 1989. Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Psychology (2004-2006), Vice-Rector of Teaching Quality and Innovation (2006-2009) and of Postgraduate Studies and International Relations (2012-2016). Rector of the UPV/EHU (2017-2021). Member of various Advisory and Scientific committees. Head of the Qualiker research group (group A of the Basque university system). Visiting researcher at three foreign universities. She has multiple publications and contributions to national and international conferences as well as invited lectures. Her lines of research focus on methodology for the development and cross-cultural adaptation of psychological assessment instruments, and on data analysis models in social and health sciences.

Goñi-Balentziaga, Olatz

Degree (2013) and PhD (2020) in Psychology from the UPV/EHU and currently professor and researcher in the Behavioral Sciences Methodology area since 2019. She has carried out research stays at the Barcelona Institute for Biomedical Research (IIBB) in 2015 and at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2018. She has been member of the Psychobiology research group from 2016 to 2021, and since them, she is member of the Qualiker research group, specifically in the line of adaptation of questionnaires from one culture and language to another. She has 13 publications, 23 contributions to national and international conferences, and 2 invited lectures.

Gurrutxaga Abad, Ander

Professor in Sociology in the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) since 1994, where he has carried out an intense research career about social conditions of basque nationalism, social change, social innovation, Nation-State and democracy or emerging industries. He has held various institutional positions at the UPV/EHU and in the Basque Government, among which the following stand out: Vice-rector for Faculty at the University of the Basque Country (1990-1991); Director of Universities of the Basque Government (1996-1997); Vice Minister of Universities and Research of the Basque Government (1997-2001). He has been awarded in the Euskoiker Award for the Best Research Trajectory in Social Sciences (2012), Euskadi Prize Finalist (2014), First Prize in Eurobask Universitas Francisco Javier Landaburu award (2021).

Galarraga Ezponda, Auxkin

Graduated in Sociology and PhD in Sociology in the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). He is currently an Associate Professor in the Sociology and Social Work Department of UPV/EHU, Faculty of Law. He has dealt with three main lines of research during his academic career: i) Social innovation, cultural innovation or the development of cultural and creative industries; ii) the analysis of the factors that cause discrimination and the conditions for social well-being; iii) opportunities to encourage the use and activation of the Basque language in the socio-economic sphere, focusing on corporate social innovation and corporate social responsibility. Along these lines, he has published several books and articles and has participated in national and international congresses and workshops.

Ipiña Larrañaga, Nagore

Nagore Ipiña Larrañaga holds a PhD in Humanities and Education in Future Organizations (Mondragon Unibertsitatea), an MBA (Mondragon Unibertsitatea), and a Bachelor's degree in Audiovisual Communication (Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea). Her current research areas focus on teacher training, multilingualism, and digitalization in education. She has previously served as coordinator for the bachelor’s programs in Early Childhood and Primary Education, coordinator of the Laboratory for Advanced Digitalization in Education (KoLaborategia), and Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer at the Faculty of Humanities and Education (Mondragon Unibertsitatea). Currently, she is the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon Unibertsitatea.

Atxa Uribe, Vicente

Vicente Atxa Uribe studied Technical Engineering in Electronics at the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragón and Higher Engineering in Electronics at the La Salle School of Engineering at the Ramón Llull University of Barcelona. Professor Atxa holds a PhD in Electronics and Communications from Staffordshire University in the United Kingdom and completed the Master Executive MBA at Mondragon Unibertsitatea. In 1993 he joined the Department of Electronics of the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea as a professor, where his work focused on teaching and participation in research and technological innovation projects in the area of Digital Signal Theory and Communications. In 2007 he was elected General Director of the Higher Polytechnic School of Mondragon Unibertsitatea, a position he held until January 2015, from which date he is Rector of Mondragon Unibertsitatea.

Larrañaga, Pedro

Pedro Larrañaga has a M.Sc. in Mathematics (Statistics) from the University of Valladolid (1981) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of the Basque Country in 1995 (Excellence Award). He is Full Professor in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. His research interests include: Bayesian networks, metaheuristics for optimization, and real applications in biomedicine, bioinformatics, neuroscience and industry 4.0. He is fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (2012), and of the Academia Europaea (2018). He received the Spanish National Prize in Computer Science (2013), the Spanish Association for Artificial Intelligence Prize (2018) and the Machine Learning Award from Amity University, India (2020). He was elected member of Jakiunde on November 18th, 2022.

Pérez-Soloviev, Vicente

Vicente P. Soloviev received the M.Sc. degree in Artificial Intelligence from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, in 2020 and he is currently a PhD student at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid in the Computational Intelligence Group. He teaches some subjects related to Artificial Intelligence for the B.Sc. in Computer Science at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. His research interests include the areas of probabilistic graphical models, metaheuristics for optimization, quantum machine learning, quantum heuristics, and real applications such as industry 4.0. Vicente holds a pre-doctoral FPI contract awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation since 2021, and is recognized by IBM as a Qiskit Advocate.

López-de-Ipiña, Diego

Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña is Full Professor and Principal Researcher of “DEUSTEK/MORElab – ICT for Good”, associated to Faculty of Engineering, University of Deusto. He was the director of the PhD program within the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto from September 2013 to August 2018. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, U.K in 2002 with a dissertation entitled “Visual Sensing and Middleware Support for Sentient Computing”. His main research interests are pervasive computing, internet of things, semantic service middleware, open linked data, big data management, and seamless human-environment interaction. He has supervised 20 PhD dissertations. He has more than 200 publications in relevant international conferences and journals on Ubiquitous Computing, Semantic Web, Middleware, Smart Cities and AmI, including more than 100 JCR-indexed journal articles. He is corresponding member of JAKIUNDE - Basque Science and Arts Academy.

Casado-Mansilla, Diego

Dr. Diego Casado-Mansilla is a lecturer at the University of Deusto and a PostDoc Researcher at DeustoTech. Member of MORElab research group in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto. He received his PhD from the same university in 2016 on Smart object-human interaction for pro-environmental behaviour change. His research interests are therefore focused on Hybrid Intelligence where Internet of Things (IoT) devices and humans collaborate, physical interaction with everyday objects, Sustainable Human-Computer Interaction (SHCI), and Persuasive and Behavioural change technologies. He has more than 50 scientific publications related to HCI, behaviour change and the IoT. He has participated in or led H2020 projects, basic-research national projects and various regional projects in collaboration with companies. He is a member of several IEEE and ACM scientific. He has carried out research stays in the United Kingdom and France.

Puerta-Beldarrain, Maite

Maite Puerta-Beldarrain is Research Assistant and PhD student at the University of Deusto in Bilbao, Spain. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics at EHU/UPV (Universidad del País Vasco) in 2019, and Master degree in Artificial intelligence at UPM (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) in 2021.

Gómez-Carmona, Oihane

Dr. Oihane Gómez Carmona is a Research Associate at the MORElab Research Group of DeustoTech - Deusto Institute of Technology. She obtained in 2015 the Bachelor´s degree in Industrial Electronic Engineering and Automatic at the University of the Basque Country and, in 2016, the Master´s degree in Automation, Electronics and Industrial Control at the University of Deusto. In 2021 she got her PhD Degree after defending his thesis entitled " Promoting the Perception of Emerging Technologies in Work Environments through Edge Computing and Hybrid Intelligence". Her research focuses on the intersection between IoT and Machine Learning oriented towards resource-constrained devices, as well as the interaction between people and technology-augmented objects.

Otegui-Feliz, Itziar

Itziar Otegui is a graduate in Humanities:Communication from the University of Deusto, and postgraduate in Scientific Journalism and Science Communication from the UNED. She is specialized in corporate communication and science communication, with working experience in communication in the public and private sector. Since 2012 she works at the CIC nanoGUNE as head of Communication and Outreach. She has participated in the creation and coordination of several STEAM outreach and education projects, such as Emakumeak Zientzian initiative (since 2017). She also participates in the HR management, and is responsible of the Gender Equality Plan.

Ibarra, Andoni

Andoni Ibarra is Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of the Basque Country. In 2022 he was a senior fellow of the Käte Hamburger Kolleg Programme at the RWTH Aachen University (Germany) and is currently a senior fellow at the Instituto de Estudios Avanzados del Litoral of the UNL (Santa Fe, Argentina). He was head of the Miguel Sánchez-Mazas Chair of Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the UPV/EHU (2000-2020), and since 2003 he has been Editor-in-Chief of Theoria, An International Journal for Theory, History and Foundations of Science. His research in recent years focuses on the conceptual and practical analysis of responsible research and innovation and, especially, on open anticipatory science, technology, and innovation.

Pitarke, Jose Mari

Jose M. Pitarke is Professor of Physics at the University of the Basque Country, Visiting Fellow at Churchill College of the University of Cambridge, and full member of the Basque Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters Jakiunde. He has been Director of the Nanoscience Cooperative Research Center nanoGUNE since its creation in 2006. He was the driving froce of the start-up company Graphenea, which was founded in 2010 as a joint venture of private investors and nanoGUNE, with the mission of producing and commercializing high-quality graphene wafers. He also participated very actively in the creation at nanoGUNE of the start-up company Biotech Foods. Since 2013, he has been president of the Elhuyar Foundation for the popularization of science and technology.

Palacios-Huerta, Ignacio

Ignacio Palacios-Huerta holds a degree in Mathematical Economics from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU (1989) and a Master's degree in Economics (1991) and a PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago (1995). His doctoral thesis (Risk and Return in Human and Financial Investments) was supervised by Gary Becker (Nobel Prize in Economics 1991) and Kevin Murphy. Prof. Palacios-Huerta is Professor of Economics, Strategy and Management at the London School of Economics in the UK since 2007, and Senior Fellow of the Ikerbasque Foundation (UPV/EHU) since 2011. He has previously held the position of Professor of Economics at Brown University (USA), in addition to the duties of Assistant and/or Associate Professor at the following institutions: Brown University, University of Chicago, Hoover Institution at Stanford University and Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
