Summary

After reviewing the origins of veterinary science, the author situates in history ; the development of public health and animal health assigned to veterinary doctors. ; He then dedicates a chapter to the art of making horseshoes and making use of them in Gipuzkoa. After situating Zumarraga geographically, reference is made to some veterinaries who were born in the town, as from the 18th century and he contributes short biographies of some of them who, as from 1879, have served in Zumarraga, while describing their collaboration with the Provincial Diputation of Gipuzkoa in the genetic improvement of cowherds. Reference is made in another chapter to the cattle-rearing brotherhoods set up in Zumarraga for mutual assistance, during the first half of the 20th century.
