Summary

These two monographic issues of Zainak - nos. 23 and 24 - devoted to Town cultures as a reflection of the subtitle of the "II Urban Anthropology Sessions" (Bilbao, 23-25 May 2002), in reference to the intrinsically multicultural and complex character of urban areas that extends above and beyond towns, intertwining itself with the global acumen. It was also meant to be a homage to Lewis Mumford, the illustrious author of The culture of the cities (1938). This international and interdisciplinary forum - anthropology, sociology, history and other social sciences - and succeeds certain preceding sessions (Donostia, 1997), which were more generic thematically, and that inspired issue no. 19 (2000) Invitation to urban anthropology. Those sessions were also organised by the Anthropology - Ethnography Section of Eusko Ikaskuntza. The chapters and articles of the present publication provide a state of the issue on urban social and cultural studies, their themes, methods and techniques.
