Summary

The author presents a structural model of the necessary knowledge for teachers who work in inter-cultural and bilingual contexts. Some important dimensions of this basis are: vision, motivation, knowledge (of oneself, general pedagogic knowledge, knowledge of the area of specialisation, and knowledge of the language), reflection and practice. These dimensions are interrelated in multiple ways to facilitate professional development of teachers and effective teaching in various contexts. The model is illustrated with examples of projects accomplished with bilingual teachers in California.
