The idea is to analyse the presumed opposition between the Herder/Humboldt´s concept of nation and that of Renan. The former can not be isolated, as is usually done, from each author´s philosophy of history in general. This article specifically studies Renan´s concept in the context of his various writings and in their variable terminology.
