The Spanish Civil War of 1936-1939 was a devastating blow to the flow of everyday life in the Basque Country. This study analyses the political, socioeconomic and cultural changes experienced in the town of Bermeo during the war. Details are also given on the development of a little known episode in the war, the Battle of Sollube. The confrontation which broke out in Bermeo and the neighbouring towns went on for a month and a half and cost a million lives.
