Summary

Fourteen authors homaged Eugène Goyheneche (1915-1989), the great Basque historian, during a session held on 2nd October 1999 in Ustaritz, the village where he was born. Eugène Goyheneche was a historian of the "complete" Basque Country: his encyclopaedian knowledge encompassed all the provinces and all the eras. He was conscious - as a historian, but also as a militant - of the importance of History. Since History is the memory of the Basque Country, it made him aware of its particular personality. For him, a good historical knowledge had to allow for the extraction of guidelines for the future of the country. He was therefore always willing to share his knowledge with whoever wished to know how to answer questions and wished to encourage research. The authors of this work, like many others, are very grateful to him.
