Summary

The subject of this study is internet memes in the Basque language. The study focuses on determining the linguistic attitudes of Basque speakers regarding their use of social media and, in particular, memes. For this purpose, a first theoretical section introduces the Basque sociolinguistic context and the second section the theory of memes. The third section presents a survey-based analysis of Basque speakers’ linguistic attitudes towards both general and specific domains, such as social networks. This work concludes that linguistic attitudes towards the use of Basque in memes and social networks are very positive. It is therefore deduced that memes can be a means of contributing to language maintenance.
