Summary

This work exhibits the results of a ethnogeographic exploration, carried out in 2005 and 2006, of some aspects of the processes of urban restructuralisation in Beijing. Our objective is to point out certain significant social variables of the generation of a "global city" in the context of the transition from socialism to capitalism. A method of exploration connecting the dimensions of urban restructuralisation with the analysis of the urban and social evolution of the city as a whole is also suggested.
