Summary

This monographic issue of Zainak, dedicated to Festivities, rituals and identities, has the subtitle of the "Conference on Anthropology of Religion" (Iruña/Pamplona, 18th and 19th May 2001), dedicated to the study of this total social fact. There was a multidisciplinary forum -anthropology, history, sociology, ethnography-, that had over 40 participants from the Basque Country, Spain, France and Denmark, and which succeeded other previous conferences (in Iruña, 1998), which had a more generic character, that inspired issue no. 18 of Zainak (Religión and Symbols), and which were also organised by the Anthropology and Ethnography section of Eusko Ikaskuntza. The chapters and articles of this publication provide information on the state of research on festive rituals, the symbols used in them, the collective identities they express, the groups that characterise such festivities and the festive expressions of profane religiousness.
